As the rest of the world slows down to prepare for the holidays, Business of Cannabis, and the entire sector, seem poised to work through the holidays. Sorry folks.

Here’s some evidence of the no-slowing-down-for-the-holidays mode the sector is in:
- Hydropothecary made a million square foot announcement last week. (Check out the BofC Conversation with their VP, Pierre Killeen)
- Aphria closed a $100 million bought deal last week.
- WeedMD first announced an agreement to supply Jarlette Health Services and then announced a $15 million bought deal the next day.
- The Aurora/CanniMed takeover saga continued (and don’t forget CanniMed and Newstrike!)
- While we’re on Aurora, their lawyers must be busy because they landed an exclusive, 90-day negotiating window with CannaRoyalty to hammer out a licensing agreement for inhalers, transdermal patches, gels and lotions.
- Then this morning, both Canopy (Quebec greenhouse partnership – from tomatoes to cannabis) and Harvest One (outdoor grow) made announcements just as we were about to press “send”.
More locations for Ontario cannabis storefronts were announced – but Richmond Hill (and East Gwillimbury and Markham) don’t want any part of it. At the same time, London used fancy mapping software to map where their stores might go.
On the legislative front:
- The newly relevant Senate would like to schedule a televised hearing on the Cannabis Act.
- Ontario’s Cannabis Act passed this week. But not without some terrible writing in the Toronto Star, “The trillium is Ontario’s official flower and marijuana could now be considered the province’s official weed with the passage of the Cannabis Act.”
From the medicinal landscape:
- On the one hand, the World Health Organization found no public health risks or risk of abuse for CBD and that cannabis should be available to patients – on the other hand, the Alberta College of Family Physicians thinks there is little, if any, benefits to medicinal cannabis.
Finally, as if underscoring the Constellation/Canopy deal, a US study suggests that people will choose legal cannabis over alcohol.
