The medical cannabis industry continues to see positive progress in the UK with the approval of another Home Office licence for the cultivation of medical cannabis in the country.
According to reports, a new medical cannabis facility has been given approval for construction on the Isle of Wight.
The approval will enable medicinal cannabis company Vecticanna to cultivate cannabis for research and development purposes. The company has stated that it aims to use advanced organic cultivation and extraction methods to test, manufacture and distribute cannabis-derived products and medications.
With a focus on fibromyalgia and neurological conditions, the company will be conducting research in collaboration with partners in Cambridge and the University of Southampton.

In a public statement, Veticanna commented: “We’re incredibly pleased to share that we’ve been granted a Home Office Licence to allow us to begin cultivating cannabis for research and development purposes right here on the Isle of Wight.
“The approval grants permission for cultivation for the purposes of Research and Development for the treatment of Fibromyalgia and other conditions related to neuroinflammation.
“The primary focus will be on researching the therapeutic and analgesic (pain relief) potential of cannabinoids and full spectrum cannabis extracts, whilst simultaneously increasing their availability for patients and end consumers.”
Vecticanna Ltd was successfully formed as an Isle of Wight medicinal cannabis research and development company in 2020 after subsidiary company Island Hemp Farms Ltd and Future Clinic Ltd discussed the possible collaboration and forming of the joint venture in 2019.
The company has received political support from Isle of Wight MP, Bob Seely, who has twice written to the Home Office regarding its desire to obtain a Home Office controlled drugs licence. In January 2020, Hampshire Police confirmed it had no objection to the proposed medicinal cannabis facility.
Cambridge HOK was appointed by the company as designer and builder of its purpose-built, secure medical cannabis cultivation facility.

Proposals have recently been put forward for the construction of another medical cannabis facility on the Isle of Man, which were welcomed by Laurence Skelly, President of Tynwald and Minister for Enterprise.
In a comment to Cannabis Wealth, Skelly noted that: “Diversifying the economy is a significant part of the Isle of Man Government’s Island Plan and the development of medicinal cannabis for export is one of the key sectors to bring forward this diversification.”
