The Oneida Indian Nation are the latest addition to New York cannabis market
The Oneida Indian Nation is the latest Native American tribe to join the cannabis industry in Verona, New York. The tribe is planning a 50,000-square-foot marijuana cultivation and processing facility on tribal lands as well as retail stores scheduled to open sometime in 2023, per MjBiz Daily.
The business will be regulated by the Oneida Nation Cannabis Commission, an independent regulatory oversight body for the safety and compliance of the cannabis business. “As more and more states across the country enter into the cannabis business, including neighboring states and other tribal nations, it is important that the Oneida people not be left out from taking advantage of this economic opportunity,” Ray Halbritter, Oneida Indian Nation Representative.

California Governor Newsom legalizes interstate commerce in cannabis
California’s world-class cannabis farmers could legally sell their crop to patients and connoisseurs in other states thanks to a new bill signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, per Leafly.
Senate Bill 1326 adds a new chapter to the Business and Professions code that gives the state Governor new powers to sign cannabis trade agreements with other legal cannabis states.
However, the changes won’t take effect unless federal law or policy changes.
“SB 1326 provides a relief valve for the oversupply of cannabis, an opportunity to grow California’s brand and market share, support job creation, and gives the state a competitive advantage as federal policy develops,” the bill’s author states.

Drug policy reforms head to congressional committee this week
A key House committee will meet on Wednesday to vote on a series of criminal justice reform bills, reports Marijuana Moment.
The bills include bipartisan proposals to clear records for prior federal cannabis convictions, provide funding for states that implement systems of automatic expungements and codify retroactive relief for people incarcerated due to crack-cocaine sentencing disparities.
As the House committee prepares to vote on these bills, Senate leadership is working to finalise a package of modest cannabis reform proposals, colloquially referred to as SAFE Plus, because it’s expected to include language from the standalone Secure and Fair Enforcement (SAFE) Banking Act.

EU members meet for annual drug meeting
Earlier this month representatives from all 27 EU member states, alongside non-governmental experts, NGO’s and private sector representatives, came together in Prague for the annual National Drug Coordinators meeting, per BusinessCann.
It comes at a crucial moment for both the Czech Republic (Czechia), which will soon consider draft legislation to fully legalise and regulate recreational cannabis, and the rest of the EU as cannabis liberalisation continues to sweep the continent.
Benjamin-Alexandre Jeanroy, CEO of cannabis consulting firm Augur Associates, told BusinessCann the event was ‘historical’, and marked a ‘victory for the concrete opening of the debate at the EU level in between sovereign member states.’
