Statistics Canada recently released household expenditure data for Q1 2021.

Cannabis Benchmarks reported previously that Q3 2020 was the first quarter in which estimated household expenditure for legal cannabis exceeded that spent in the illicit market, a trend that continued into Q1 2021.

From Q1 2020 to Q1 2021, legal recreational cannabis expenditures grew 74% to C$935M, while illicit cannabis expenditures dropped by 11% to C$757M in the same period. Medical cannabis expenditures made up only 6.8% of total cannabis spending in Canada in Q1 2021.
