Now SAFE Banking is back again

cannabis news about safe banking act

GUESS WHO’S BACK?

SAFE Banking is back

Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-CO), the sponsor of the Secure and Fair Enforcement (SAFE) Banking Act, now wants to attach it to the America COMPETES Act, a non-cannabis specific bill regarding research and innovation, reports Marijuana Moment

A refresher

  • SAFE Banking stalled in the US Senate
  • It was then attached to and subsequently removed from the National Defense Authorization Act
  • The new amendment has to be approved by the House Rules Committee before it will officially make it to the House for consideration
  • Last Monday, Perlumutter said he will not seek reelection

The takeaway

“Cannabis-related businesses—big and small—and their employees are in desperate need of access to the banking system and access to capital in order to operate in an efficient, safe manner and compete in the growing global cannabis marketplace,” Perlmutter said in a statement. Good luck Congressman!

C IS FOR COOKIE

Berner launches Wiz Khalifa brand, Cookies Toronto store—all while undergoing chemo

While celebrating the launch of its new Toronto flagship store and its partnership with Wiz Khalifa, Cookies founder Berner is also undergoing chemotherapy for cancer, reports Forbes in a Q&A with the former rapper.

The details

  • Khalifa Kush brand launches Jan. 28, with Wiz appearing as a guest budtender at the Cookies Maywood store
  • Cookies Toronto, a partnership with Gage Cannabis, opened last weekend
  • There’s also a Cookies location in Barcelona, Tel Aviv and there are plans for the UK

On his global expansion, which includes four countries:

“It’s absolutely crazy, it’s mind-blowing,” he said. “I can’t even believe it. One person from San Francisco was able to touch the whole world through cannabis, music, and clothing. It’s pretty humbling. It actually makes what I’m going through a little easier. God forbid something goes the wrong way, at least I know I did something that people dream of, right?”.

BROKEN CHAIN

Kiva renames delayed holiday edibles brand ‘Supply Chain Chaos’

California’s Kiva Confections is coping with frustrating supply chain delays with humour. After its “Holiday Punch” branded cannabis tins were included in massive COVID-induced backlogs in the shipping industry, they’re rebranding them “Post-Holiday Punch: Supply Chain Chaos,” reports Insider

The strategy

“Instead of wasting the packaging and product that had already been produced, we decided to be transparent with our retailers and consumers that this product was intended to be released during the holidays, but we were impacted by the same supply-chain issues plaguing many industries right now,” said Kristin Rasmussen, brand marketing director.

GIVE ‘EM WHAT THEY WANT

The Polish government is ignoring growing demand for medical cannabis

New legislation designed to add to Poland’s medical cannabis supply was turned down by Parliament on Jan. 13, reports Prohibition Partners

The details

  • Poland has one of the largest numbers of registered medical cannabis consumers, at more than 9,261
  • Two of three medical cannabis bills were rejected by parliament, one regarding domestic high-THC cultivation, medical cannabis reimbursement and intoxicated driving; the second was aimed at overhauling hemp cultivation regulations
  • One moved ahead for further deliberation: a bill that would allow state researchers to cultivate hemp with more than 0.3% THC
