Weedmaps, Kevin Durant team up to dunk on stigma

Hot off the release of its new weed-finding app, Weedmaps announced they’re teaming up with NBA superstar Kevin Durant in an effort to fight the stigma associated with cannabis consumption, according to a release

The specs

It’s a multi-year deal between Durant’s Thirty Five Ventures group, which has investments in Dutchie, Postmates and Coinbase. It also includes a sponsorship deal with media company Boardroom, which includes a podcast and a YouTube show hosted by Durant and business partner Rich Kleiman with more than 700,000 subscribers.

“As the technology leader in the industry, Weedmaps has consistently been at the forefront of change over the last decade,” said Durant in a statement. “In partnering with Boardroom and Thirty Five Ventures, they’ve shown an even bigger commitment to innovation.”

(Presumably some of that ‘change’ was when Weedmaps stopped promoting illicit dispensaries.)

Boardroom x Weedmaps

Part of the plan is to create an original content series, slated to begin in 2022, with a focus on cannabis stigma in sports.

“This partnership with Kevin Durant, Rich Kleiman, and the team at Thirty Five Ventures is a pivotal step forward in our ongoing efforts to break down stigmas surrounding cannabis, especially in the sports industry,” said Chris Beals, CEO of Weedmaps, in a statement.

There will also be a podcast called Out of Office, co-branded collabs, merch and more original content to come.
