Northern Leaf has partnered with Canadian biotech firm 3R Biotech to open 3R Europe, a facility combining cannabis plant testing, cleaning, preservation and reproduction at a single site for the first time in Europe.
Northern Leaf is installing the facility this month at its 100,000 sq ft EU-GMP site in St Lawrence, Jersey, which accounts for an estimated 90% of the island’s medical cannabis exports.
The partnership gives 3R Biotech a European base for advanced tissue culture, and lets Northern Leaf store and reproduce plant genetics on site following a 25% increase in the company’s production capacity last year.
“European medical cannabis producers have long sourced plant health services piecemeal – testing from one provider, propagation from another, remediation from a third, and certified clean genetics from somewhere else entirely,” Robert Allen, Chief Executive Officer of 3R Biotech, explained.
“3R Europe changes that, bringing the full plant health service stack together at a single site for the first time in Europe.”
Allen added that the cost of inconsistency rises as cultivation scales, and that tissue culture ‘provides a way to standardise plant material, eliminate disease risk at the source, and ensure uniform performance across production.’
Steven Tan, Chief Executive Officer of Northern Leaf, said the facility would give the company ‘tighter control over plant health, genetic integrity, and THC consistency’ as it scales bulk cannabis flower exports to regulated European markets, including Germany, where Northern Leaf supplied 3,590 kilograms of flower in 2025.
Tan called tissue culture ‘the foundation that unlocks everything from disease-free propagation to advanced breeding techniques and new cultivar development,’ and said the technology could eventually extend to other Jersey crops, including the Jersey Royal potato.
The facility also creates a locally-based scientific role. Ciara Hayes, a Jersey-born biomedical science graduate, has joined Northern Leaf as Tissue Culture Associate after training with 3R Biotech in Washington.
Northern Leaf’s capacity has grown from 25% to 75% of the St Lawrence site’s total output over the past two years, delivering a fivefold increase in revenue.
