Materia Malta has confirmed it has completed its first export of medical cannabis products from Malta to Germany.

The export of commercial medical cannabis has come from the company’s EU GMP manufacturing site.

Materia Malta’s German distribution subsidiary, Materia Deutschland GmbH, took delivery of the shipment and has commenced sales to pharmacies with a number of pre-orders already received, which will be fulfilled in the coming days.

Managing director, Europe of Materia, Nick Pateras, commented: “Our products are already helping patients in Malta improve their quality of life, and now we can support the needs of patients in Germany too.

“We believe Malta will play an important role in the global cannabis supply chain, as it has done within the broader pharmaceuticals sector for decades. We are proud to be the company establishing new frontiers for Malta’s and Europe’s cannabis industry.”

In 2021, Materia Malta Operating Ltd received a licence for the commercial production of cannabis for medicinal and research purposes. Materia Malta received the licence from the Malta Medicines Authority, enabling the commercial production and export of medical cannabis.

Materia is focusing on breaking into the European medical cannabis market through Germany, and in 2021 announced an agreement with Eurox Pharma to distribute its medical cannabis extracts in the country.

In line with this strategy, last year, the first medical cannabis company to IPO on the London Stock Exchange, Kanabo Group, signed a letter of intent to acquire Materia.

The company has now provided an update on the agreement, stating that discussions have developed such that both parties believe the relationship is best consummated through a contract manufacturing agreement, as opposed to the previously proposed transaction.

The pair are aiming to innovate the European medical cannabis supply chain by focusing on importing and selling medical cannabis products to German pharmacies through Materia Deutschland, and bringing new products to patients.
