World events overshadowed much of the news last week. 

Between a global outbreak and the narrowing of the US presidential race – cannabis news has been knocked down a peg. But do not worry, the BofC team has been keeping track. (Including how Mr. Biden feels about cannabis…)

This week the world got some very old and some very new updates from the Ontario Cannabis Store – as well as two new product varieties hitting the shelves: beverages and topicals

On the other end of Canada, the world’s largest cannabis company shuttered two greenhouses and made considerable layoffs and the voice of the industry in Ottawa announced a new leader this morning.

Top of the news last week – well, behind the virus – is Joe Biden’s comeback in the Presidential race. Which brings us to his cannabis policies – past and present.

Bringing more politics into cannabis, the Canadian Cannabis Council announced George Smitherman will be taking the helm of that industry group.

The cannabis supply chain sometimes runs through China. Especially vape pens. MJBizDaily took a look.

Also distrupting the supply chain: Canopy Growth made news on the West Coast last week – shuttering two greenhouses and cutting staffBofC’s Jay Rosenthal provided comment

“These companies have grown tremendously over the course of a very short amount of time and so it’s only natural that they are adjusting to the market size, adjusting to market realities, and adjusting to the regulatory environment in which they’re operating. And unfortunately, that sometimes means downsizing some facilities or doing away with them altogether.”

The Ontario Cannabis Store released their annual report… for the first fiscal year of legalization. (Which ended a long, long time ago.) The report runs through March 2019 – all pre-brick + mortar cannabis stores.

While early days at the Ontario Cannabis Store weren’t great, early days of Cannabis 2.0 is going better: $4.3 million in January 2020

While we’re on retail in Ontario – 450 cannabis store applications were received by the Province on March 2nd alone

Mar. 3 – Benchmark Update

December 2019 sales were recently released by Statistics Canada, completing data for the 2019 calendar year. For 2019 as a whole, Canada’s legal cannabis market generated C$1.19 billion in revenue. December sales totaled about C$146 million, up 8% MoM. The expansion of retail outlets continued to drive increased sales, with the number of shops across Canada rising from under 600 in November 2019 to over 650 in December 2019. Read more.

The QC GMP Laboratory Manager will oversee all aspects directly related to laboratory operations and provide support in interdepartmental processes.
