In the course of the legalization of medical cannabis in Ukraine, Viktor Liaschko visited Germany’s largest cannabis network Grünhorn to find out how it works.
On Friday, Minister Viktor Liaschko met with his German counterpart Karl Lauterbach at the German-Ukrainian health summit in Berlin to discuss how Ukraine can be supported. As part of his visit in Germany, Liaschko traveled to Leipzig to visit Grünhorn on Saturday.
Together with Deputy Minister Maryna Slobodnichenko, other representatives of his ministry and the Ukrainian Association for Medical Cannabis, he explored the logistical and material conditions. He visited the cannabis extract and capsule production in the laboratory of Germany’s largest online pharmacy for medicinal cannabis as well as the filling of the flowers.
Managing Director Sven-Roger von Schilling of Schurer Pharma & Kosmetik GmbH, part of the Grünhorn network: “We feel deep sympathy for Ukraine and go along with the decision to use medicinal cannabis to overcome the consequences of the war.
“At Grünhorn, we have already been actively involved in delivering medicines and relief supplies to Ukraine. We are therefore particularly proud that Minister Liaschko is interested in our experience and recognizes Grünhorn as an important player in the cannabis sector.”
Background:
- Germany has promised Ukraine, which has been attacked by Russia, further assistance with healthcare and intends to intensify its cooperation. This was agreed at the German-Ukrainian health summit between Ministers Viktor Liaschko and Karl Lauterbach on February 2, 2024.
- Ukrainian lawmakers voted in December 2023 to legalize the medical use of cannabis.
- The focus is on soldiers with post-traumatic stress disorder due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, comparable to the situation in Israel in 2004, as well as on patients with cancer.
- In Germany, medicinal cannabis was already approved for medical prescription in 2017. The resulting experience was the reason for Viktor Liaschko’s visit to Grünhorn in Germany.
- With a market share of 20 % and an annual turnover of more than 30 million euros, Grünhorn is a leading brand with an associated online pharmacy for medicinal cannabis in Germany. Every third prescription for cannabis flowers is submitted to Grünhorn.
