US lawmakers call for study into the environmental impact of cannabis grows

Republican Representatives Earl Carter of Georgia and Doug Lamborn of Colorado are calling on four US Government agencies to study the environmental impact of cannabis cultivation as the Senate considers a federal bill legalizing cannabis, reports MJ Biz Daily.

The pair are seeking answers to questions such as:

  • How legalization impacts state energy consumption and emission levels
  • What impact illegal cannabis grows have on the country’s water supply
  • What harms illegal cannabis growers’ use of various fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides pose to wildlife, habitats, and humans in the US

In a letter obtained by the Washington Examiner and backed by Smart Approaches to Marijuana – an organization opposed to the legalization of cannabis – the Reps. stated that “the American people must have a better understanding of the environmental costs of this rapidly growing industry.”

FARM TO PATIENT

Cannabis cultivators in Pennsylvania could be allowed to sell direct to patients

Republican Pennsylvania senator Chris Gebhard has confirmed he will be introducing a bill to give independent, in-state medical cannabis growers a chance to sell directly to patients, per Marijuana Moment

The much-needed reform will enable Pennsylvania-based independent cannabis growers and processors to open dispensaries as vertically integrated businesses.

According to Gebhard, the Department of Health’s current rules have “created an unfair system for getting products to patients.”

“The most evenhanded solution to this problem would be to issue two permits to all the independent Pennsylvania-based grower/processors who do not currently have one,” he wrote to colleagues. “This will create a free and fair market and will allow these businesses to operate on the same playing field as their competitors.”

BARRIERS TO ACCESS

Medical cannabis patients in Quebec will not have access to health-care professionals due to lack of funds

Santé Cannabis provides patients with resources on where to find and how to use medicinal cannabis, and is the only no-fee medical cannabis service covered by Quebec’s public health insurance, per CBC.

The organization has, to date, relied on public funding and private grants from cannabis companies to carry out its work.

Due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, these companies have started pulling their grants. Santé Cannabis is now asking for more funding from public, private sectors, in order to serve patients.

“We had to scale down our staff to be able to focus on the continuation of care to our current patients,” said Erin Prosk, president and co-founder of Santé Cannabis. “That means thousands of patients across Quebec will not be able to have access to health-care professionals to support the safe and effective use of cannabis for therapeutic reasons.”

STUDY STALLED

Europe’s first recreational cannabis pilot study to be delayed after product ‘narrowly failed to meet quality standards’

Europe’s inaugural THC recreational cannabis trial, due to launch this week, is set to be delayed by ‘weeks or a few months’, according to the city’s Health Department, reports BusinessCann.

The delay is due to the cannabis products, which were set to be sold to customers across the Swiss city of Basel, narrowly failing ‘to meet a quality standard stipulated in the Ordinance on Pilot Trials under the Narcotics Act’. No date has been given as to when the study will be able to return in full.

“The cannabis products are now being analyzed again by an independent body, which is why the start of sales has been delayed. At the same time, alternative solutions are being examined,” stated Regine Steinauer, Head of Addiction Department, Basel-Stadt Health Department said in a statement.
