SAFER Banking Act Passage Will Be ‘Priority’ For Lawmakers Before Election

The Secure and Fair Enforcement Regulation (SAFER) Banking Act is set to be a key priority for lawmakers to pass before the upcoming election, according to the Senate Majority Leader.

Chuck Schumer told a press conference yesterday that his chamber would ‘work very hard’ to get the landmark bill passed before November this year.

Asked whether he believed its passage was possible before November, he said: “We believe very strongly in so many things, and we are going to continue to work on the agenda that we put before us.

“We first have to fund the government—the supplemental is very important,” he said. “But after that, you will see us turn to many of the bills that we passed: the SAFER Act, safety on the rails, so many other things,” Marijuana Moment reported.

In September last year, the SAFER Banking Act cleared the Senate Banking Committee by a vote of 14-9, marking the first time the cannabis legislation will get a full floor vote in the Senate.

After the funding issue is solved, Schumer has suggested that SAFER could soon be sent to the president’s desk.

The bill has now passed through the House seven times, but has continually faced roadblocks before being brought into law.

Ed Perlmutter, former Congressman and policy advisor for the National Cannabis Roundtable (NCR) told Benzinga that he is optimistic that the bill now has enough support to finally be passed.
