MOTIVATIONAL CANNABIS

This D.C. company sells motivational speeches with a side of cannabis

In Washington, D.C., where possessing small amounts of cannabis is legal but adult-use sales are not, entrepreneurs are finding creative ways to deliver low-cost services and “gifting” cannabis as a legal bonus, reports the Washington Post.

Dreamy DC, for example, sells motivational speeches at different lengths and price points ($60 to $360), and gifts cannabis at the end of the speech. While regulators disagree on whether to outlaw gifting or legalize adult-use cannabis, Dreamy DC’s Liz Sluchak said the service has proven to be vital through the pandemic.

“I think I am providing an integral service to people’s lives,” she said. “The speeches that we do and the gifts we provide are important for people getting through their day.”

SAFE LOBBYING

Cannabis industry pushes for banking reform ahead of midterm elections

Concerned that Republicans will take control of Congress after November’s midterms, more than 20 cannabis executives are on a “lobbying blitz,” asking lawmakers to pass the SAFE Banking Act, reports the Hill

SAFE Banking has bipartisan support, while other issues surrounding taxation and social justice are more controversial.

“There is certainly momentum building around trying to get something done this year in the Senate,” said Curaleaf CEO Joe Bayern. “On both the Republican and Democratic side we’re seeing consensus for SAFE Banking as being the piece of legislation that could pass.”

COLLEGE AND CANNABIS

NCAA increases THC threshold for college athletes

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is demonstrating some sanity during March Madness by increasing its THC threshold from 35 to 150 nanograms per millilitre, reports Cannabis Now. The policy is now aligned with the World Anti-Doping Agency.

“Reconsidering the NCAA approach to cannabis testing and management is consistent with feedback from membership on how to better support and educate student-athletes in a society with rapidly evolving public health and cultural views regarding cannabis use,” said NCAA chief medical officer Dr. Brian Hainline in a statement.

“Marijuana is not considered a performance-enhancing substance, but it remains important for member schools to engage student-athletes regarding substance use prevention and provide management and support when appropriate.”

MI CANNA-TOUR

Touring Michigan’s largest new cannabis grow

Thirty miles west of Kalamazoo, Michigan, 305 Farms is building a new 350,000 square-foot cannabis cultivation facility in the village of Lawrence. It’s believed to be the state’s largest so far, reports Mlive.

The details

  • Phase 1, which is a 44,000 square-foot grow, is complete
  • There will be a lab, commercial kitchen, rolling machine and a vault for storing product
  • With sustainability in mind, 95% of the water used will be recycled and LED lights will be used
  • They plan to grow about 80,000 plants at at time by 2025

“We’ve finally made it for Lawrence,” said village president David Quick. “Lawrence has struggled for a long time. The park has struggled. With 305 coming in and bringing in all these jobs, the tax base is phenomenal for us.”
