Federal court lifts injunction barring New York from issuing cannabis retail licenses

A federal judge has partially lifted a temporary injunction barring New York regulators from issuing recreational cannabis retail dispensary licenses in five regions of the state, reports High There.

The New York Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) is now able to issue licenses for dispensaries in those regions, however, the injunction has been left in place for the Finger Lakes region.

The decision has been welcomed by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul who stated: “For the first time, New Yorkers in nearly every region of the state will have access to safer, high-quality, adult-use cannabis products. I am committed to ensuring New York continues to lead the nation in our safe and equitable approach to the cannabis market.”

According to the publication, a lawsuit challenging the state’s criteria for issuing Conditional Adult-Use Retail Dispensary (CAURD) licenses continues in the federal court system.

NBA

NBA to allow players to promote, invest in and consume cannabis

A groundbreaking bargaining agreement between the National Basketball Association and its players association would allow players to invest in and promote cannabis companies, reports MJ Biz Daily.

The publication highlights that the proposed seven year agreement, which must be ratified by the union and team governors, would open up a new source of funds for cannabis companies, which have been struggling in the face of a tight funding market.

Paul Haagen, co-director of the Center for Sports Law and Policy at Duke University, told MJ Biz Daily: “Assuming that the rumors are true, and that the new (collective bargaining agreement) will remove cannabis from the list of prohibited substances, it would constitute a belief by the League that public attitudes toward cannabis have changed enough that it is no longer a sufficient issue for the League that it is worth any continued conflict with the players over it.”
