US store-to-door delivery giant DoorDash announced last week that it will begin offering CBD and intoxicating hemp substances through its service in response to growing demand.
Intoxicating hemp-derived substances have become one of the most contentious products in the US over the past year, seeing manufacturers utilise what has been described as a legal ‘loophole’ to sell products with similar effects as recreational cannabis with little to no regulatory oversight.
While numerous bills are underway to rectify this phenomenon federally, these are still a way off, leading many states to move to regulate themselves, creating a patchwork of accessibility across the country.
Given the regulatory complexity, DoorDash has previously avoided handling these products but has now announced a stark shift in policy in response to ‘growing demand’.
Jacob Morello, director and general manager of alcohol and emerging categories at DoorDash, said in a press release: “As preferences evolve, DoorDash can now help eligible customers find new products to safely enjoy while they unwind and recharge in the new year.”
DoorDash emphasized that it will only deliver products meeting the federal definition of hemp—containing no more than 0.3% THC by dry weight. Offerings include gummies, chocolates, mints, and drinks.
The company is partnering with major alcohol retailers like Total Wine & More and ABC Fine Wine & Spirits to distribute hemp products in states where they are legal. DoorDash also teamed up with cannabis beverage company Cann to promote THC and CBD drinks, offering discounts through January.
