A new cannabis standard has been proposed in order to support change control process management.
Proposed by ASTM International, formerly known as American Society for Testing and Materials, the standard guide will cover change control process management for the cannabis and hemp industry.
The cannabis committee for ASTM, a not-for-profit non-governmental organization that develops voluntary consensus standards and defers to appropriate government authorities to determine the legal and regulatory framework regarding the control and use of cannabis, is developing the proposed standard.
Creating a clear process
ASTM says that, as the cannabis industry grows, the quality expectations and control challenges also increase. The guide aims to create a clear change control process within cannabis organisations to allow them to maintain, document, and track critical decisions within manufacturing and quality system operations.
Maribel Colón, quality assurance consultant and vice chair of the ASTM subcommittee on cannabis quality management systems, said: “As the cannabis industry grows, the quality, expectations, and control challenges grow within. The creation and implementation of this standard guide will increase cannabis business efficiency and minimise risk, time, and potential cost of poorly managed changes.”
Colón says that cannabis producers and service industries, such as test laboratories, will benefit most from the proposed standard guide.
