Canadian Postal Strike Sees Medical Cannabis Patients Struggle for Access

Medical cannabis patients are struggling to access thier prescriptions in Canada as the nationwide postal strike shows little sign of abating.

Last month, Business of Cannabis reported that Canadian cannabis operators were preparing their businesses for a postal strike involving 55,000 postal workers.

As the strike enters it fourth week, larger issues within Canada’s supply chain are beginning to come to the fore, and medical cannabis patients are bearing the brunt.

According to Stratcann, with Canada Post, at the forefront of the dispute, remaining the primary shipping method, patients are now being forced to seek alternatives to access their medicine.

The strike has exacerbated pre-existing logistical challenges, particularly for patients without traditional addresses, relying on PO boxes serviced by Canada Post.

Furthermore, the disruption has driven some patients to seek alternatives in recreational stores, potentially leading to confusion and difficulties in finding equivalent products.

The strike’s timing is particularly unfortunate, as the medical cannabis sector in Canada could benefit from expansion.

Instead, active client registrations with federal license holders have declined from 345,520 in 2018 to 180,878 in 2024.

Concerns have been raised withing the industry that elderly patients, in particular, may be driven away from the medical cannabis system due to access issues, potentially seeking alternative, more easily accessible solutions.

With the Federal Government refusing to intervene, and both sides still far apart on key issues, there is seemingly no realisatic end in sight for the strike.

Patient associations and industry pundits have however suggested that the exposure of these supply chain weaknesses could potentially lead to much needed reform across the country, urging a shift towards more diversified and patient-centric distribution models.
