Canadian company to build affordable homes from hemp

Global Hemp Group has purchased over 800 acres of land to build affordable homes with hemp-based materials in Colorado.

The Vancouver-based company announced on Monday 23 August that it had secured the remaining land required for the development of its planned green community in Colorado.

This third contract for 664 acres of the total 874-acre assemblage will provide for the phased construction of affordable homes in the context of a Planned Unit Development (PUD) subject to approval by the Town of Hayden.

Global Hemp Group (GHC) now has more than 830 acres available for the development of affordable homes over the 20-year-plus project.

The project, which was first announced in September 2020, will see the firm partner with Western Sierra Resource Corporation (WSRC) to create a Sustainable Economic Zone in the state and build sustainable, affordable housing using hemp-based construction materials.

The “vertically integrated” project will use the substantial existing water resources to irrigate and cultivate industrial hemp; process and utilise it in the on-site manufacturing of green renewable construction products; and build affordable carbon neutral/carbon negative housing.

In May, the company acquired more than 44-acres to be the home of its centralised processing and manufacturing centre at its Hemp Agro-Industrial Zone (HAIZ).

Its aim for the HAIZ is to establish a “showcase” venue for its partners in agriculture, research and development, light manufacturing, a range of related commercial products and green technologies, and housing.

This is designed to complement the town of Hayden by generating employment opportunities and increasing business revenue for the community.

Speaking earlier this year, Curt Huber, President of Global Hemp stated: “Since Global Hemp’s inception, the company’s vision has always been about sustainability and collaboration, with a focus on the development of the industrial aspects of the hemp.

“The multiple applications of the hemp plant, notably in the building industry, will become the most significant over time. This project combines all of the Company’s values into one project and enables individual homeowners to make a meaningful environmental statement of their own. We are looking forward to working with the Western Sierra team in the development of this project.”
