Canadian cannabis sales slow in February, Delaware 22nd state to legalise recreational cannabis, & Louisiana Senators claim they ‘unknowingly created recreational THC market’

Canadian Cannabis Sales Slow in February

Cannabis sales across Canada fell 7.5% from C$395.4m in January this to C$365.7m in February, though they remained up 12.8% year-on-year.

According to New Cannabis Ventures, total sales throughout 2022 were up 17.9% to $4.52bn, and have increased by 13.5% so far in 2023 despite February’s dip.

The new figures, released by Statistics Canada, also suggest that when adjusted to equalise the number of days in each month, February cannabis sales would have increased roughly 2.4% over January.

While sales growth often dips in the first few months of the year, an increase in the number of stores as well as falling flower prices which have been attracting consumers from the black market have been helping drive growth.

In Ontario, the largest province in population, sales were down 8.5% from January and up 9% from a year ago. Alberta, which is the second-largest province, was down 5.9% from January and up 13% from a year ago.

Delaware Legalizes Recreational Marijuana Despite Governor’s Opposition

Delaware has become the latest state to legalize recreational marijuana, despite opposition from the Governor.

The state’s House and Senate passed two bills legalizing marijuana possession and establishing a regulatory framework for the industry, with the bills becoming law without the Governor’s signature.

As Forbes reports, the Governor John Carney announced on Friday (April 21) that while his view that the full legalization of recreational cannabis was not a step in the right direction had not changed, ‘it’s time to move on’.

“I decided because I believe we’ve spent far too much time focused on this issue, when Delawareans face more serious and pressing concerns every day,” he said in a press statement.

The first bill would legalize the possession and consumption of up to one ounce of cannabis for adults aged 21 and over. The second bill would establish a regulatory framework for the cultivation, processing, and sale of cannabis products.

Louisiana Legislators Say They Unknowingly Legalized Hemp Products With THC

Two state senators in Louisiana have said a recently passed bill to roll back the limit of THC that can be contained in consumable hemp products saw the Legislature ‘unknowingly create a recreational THC market’.

Republican Monroe Sen. Stewart Cathey and Republican Monroe Sen. Jay Morris said on Tuesday that the legalisation of recreational THC ‘needs to be done openly and honestly’, High Times reported.

The pair alleged that Senate Bill 219, which the committee voted to advance to a full senate debate, ‘was sold to the Legislature as if we weren’t allowing psychoactive materials’.

SB-219 proposes to change state law that allows up to 8 mg of THC in a hemp product. Instead, it proposes a maximum of 2 mg THC.

While the senators are working to amend the state’s current law, advocates and business owners spoke about the detrimental effects that amending the law will cause.
