Hemp ‘Fringe’ Festival To Run In Conjunction With Glasgow Climate Talks

A NEW hemp-focused festival, Beyond the Green, is set to be launched alongside the upcoming Cop26 United Nations Climate Change Summit next month.

Beyond the Green, described by its organisers as the first ever Cop fringe festival focused on hemp, will seek to ensure that the crop and its decarbonising properties are placed on the agenda at the climate summit.

The festival will take place at the Barrow Market nearby St Luke’s in Glasgow’s East End where Cop26 will be held between October 31st and November 12th.

It will launch on Friday November 5 at 17.30, and run throughout the weekend until 10pm on Sunday November 7, featuring a raft of events including talks from scientists and industry experts, live music and a hemp market.

Hemp Is A Carbon Sink

A pop-up medical cannabis clinic will also run throughout the event, enabling patients to speak with experts and understand the potential benefits of medical cannabis, as well as how it can be legally accessed in the UK.

“The time is now for the UK government to legalise Hemp for all purposes and unlock the full potential of the most misunderstood plant in the world,” said Beyond the Green organiser Sam Cannon.

“A thriving Hemp industry can tackle climate change, produce medicine to help with conditions such as epilepsy and anxiety, boost the economy, create jobs and support developing countries to reduce carbon emissions.”

The group hopes to encourage the summit’s attendees, which are set to include over 100 world leaders and some 20,000 delegates from around the world, to discuss hemp’s potential to decarbonise multiple industries and tackle the climate crisis.

This includes its carbon sequestration properties, or its ability to absorb and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, alongside its uses as an alternative to fossil fuel-derived plastics and even as a building material in the form of hempcrete.

Mr Cannon, stays some more big names attendees are due to be announced of the festival shortly.
