Any doctor can prescribe medical cannabis for any condition with evidence of efficacy. The sole domestic producer, Bedrocan, supplies its output at a fixed price to the government, which distributes it to domestic and international markets.
Reimbursement is available only in some cases and only through private health insurance.
The 'Weed Experiment' (Wietexperiment) creates legal, domestic supply chains for the coffeeshops of ten municipalities, replacing illicit supply. After startup and transitional phases from December 2023, the main experimental phase began on 7 April 2025 and is intended to run for at least four years.
Ten municipalities and ten licensed cultivators participate; every coffeeshop in each municipality sources exclusively from the selected suppliers. The current government is less supportive than its predecessor, raising stakeholder concern about early termination if problems arise.
Coffeeshops in the experiment stock a range of regulated, Dutch-grown flower products from the licensed cultivators.
