FIRST TO MARKET
New York’s first cannabis retail store will open next week
The Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) announced that the state’s first adult-use cannabis retailer will open on December 29th, fulfilling their promise to see retail stores before the end of 2022, reports Marijuana Moment.
The first store will be operated by Housing Works, a non-profit organization that provides HIV/AIDS services, after securing one of the 36 CAURD licenses announced.
The dispensary “will welcome patrons with an introductory shopping experience upon opening, with plans to carefully build out an expanded and thoughtfully curated space as cannabis products become more available,” a press release says.
SNDL gives 26 retail stores to Nova Cannabis in a retail strategy shift
Canadian cannabis company Sundial Growers Inc. (SNDL) has announced a strategic shift in its retail strategy through a deal with Nova Cannabis, reports MJ Biz Daily.
Under the deal, Nova Cannabis will manage the sale of Sundial’s cannabis products as SNDL transfers Nova 26 retail stores. This strategic shift comes as SNDL looks to reduce its direct retail presence. The deal with Nova Cannabis is expected to be completed in May 2023
The deal hopes to strengthen its “command of the fastest-growing retail shelf space in Canada while de-risking store-level profitability on (the company’s) financials.” said SNDL.
BLUNT TRUTH
Cannabis driving course to kick off January gets skeptical reception
Starting in January, AAA will be teaching a curriculum called “Shifting Gears: the Blunt Truth about Marijuana and Driving” to up to 50,000 aspiring drivers annually, reports The Boston Globe.
Some experts have expressed concerns about the effectiveness and accuracy of the program, alleging that it contains misleading statistics and has a bias against cannabis that may hinder efforts to educate teens about the risks of driving under the influence. The curriculum includes interactive quizzes, videos, worksheets, lesson plans, and other materials that are intended to be used by instructors and students. AAA claims that the program is evidence-based and has received endorsement from Brown University’s School of Public Health.
“This is like DARE 2.0,” said Dr. Peter Grinspoon, “We should be relying on facts we actually know and can demonstrate instead of scare tactics.”.
