Cannabis research reform in the US sees stocks rise

LANDMARK LEGISLATION

Cannabis research reform in the US sees stocks rise

Cannabis stocks have been buoyed after US President Joe Biden signed into law landmark legislation which would expand cannabis research on Friday, reports Proactive Investors

The Medical Marijuana and Cannabidiol Research Expansion Act will make it easier for scientists to study the plant, and instructs the federal Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to investigate policies that inhibit cannabis research.

Stocks rose on the news on Monday morning, with Australis Capital Inc soaring 15%, Planet 13 Holdings Inc up 5.6%, Jushi Holdings Inc climbing 6.8%, Delta 9 Cannabis Inc up 4.2%, and FSD Pharma Inc adding 2.8%.

The red states most important for the cannabis industry

Stating that the cannabis industry is near an inflection point, Technical 420 has highlighted some of the conservative states that it finds to be the most important when trying to understand how much the US industry has changed.

These include:

  • Florida
  • Missouri
  • Alabama
  • Mississippi
  • West Virginia

The publication has stated that it expects to see additional conservative states pass legislation to legalize some form of cannabis over the next few years.

10 YEARS ON

Colorado cannabis sees biggest downturn since legalization

Since Colorado legalized recreational cannabis in 2012 the market has matured, with some businesses succeeding and many others either shutting down or being gobbled up by bigger fish, reports MJ Biz Daily

As one of the first adult-use markets the state offers plenty of lessons to cannabis business executives across the country.

Joe Hodas, chief marketing officer at Boulder-based Wana Brands, has been working with cannabis companies in Colorado since the beginning of the recreational market.

He told the publication: “People don’t seem to understand that if we continue to add taxes and make legal cannabis more expensive, consumers will continue to (seek out) the black market.”

UK cannabis groups bring their calls for reform to the heart of Government

The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for CBD Products held its annual general meeting in The House of Commons on Wednesday 30 November, reports BusinessCann. The meeting featured a discussion with a Police & Crime Commissioner on the challenges facing cannabis reform in both government and police services.

Additionally, drug reform organisation Volteface held a private parliamentary launch of its report examining the barriers preventing doctors from prescribing medical cannabis more widely throughout the UK.

The Volteface session was opened by Labour MP for Manchester Jeff Smith, who introduced the ‘Medical Cannabis Access Bill’ earlier this year. Smith argued for the need to create a solid evidence base from which clinicians could work from, and the creation of a register of clinicians who have been trained in prescribing on the NHS.

He stated: “I’m very pleased that the report… really picks up those things. One, trusted clinicians and educating clinicians, and two, to create an evidence base.
