NOT SO GREEN
Cannabis packaging becomes an issue on the streets of America
Waste packaging from a burgeoning and newly legalized cannabis industry litters streets across the country, adding to a global crisis of plastic waste, reports Inside Climate News.
In New York, regulators who are making the state’s first-ever rules for the retail sale of recreational marijuana hope they have answers to limit their state’s contribution to the problem.Â
They’ve been working to include sustainable packaging requirements into the licenses that businesses will need to open by the end of this year.

Vermont’s adult-use market kicks off two years after legalization
MJBizDaily highlights that the launch of rec sales in Vermont comes about two years after adult-use legislation became law without the governor’s signature.
Vermont’s Cannabis Control Board on Sept. 14 granted recreational cannabis licenses to Mountain Girl Cannabis in Rutland and Flora Cannabis in Middlebury and gave the OK for Ceres Med – formerly Champlain Valley Dispensary – in South Burlington to transition from medical to adult-use sales.
Regulators have said delays in issuing licenses for outdoor cultivators could create supply challenges in the adult-use market’s early stages.
STATE VS FEDERAL
State and Federal cannabis laws clash over home cultivation in Canada
‘Does a provincial cannabis cultivation ban supersede the rights granted under federal legalization?’ asks Leafly.
Janick Murray-Hall believes that sections 5 and 10 of Quebec’s Cannabis Regulation Act are against Canadian’s charter rights and freedom on the grounds that they directly contravene the federal Cannabis Act. Under the Act, Canadians are permitted to grow and possess up to four cannabis plants per household for personal consumption.Â
Murray-Hall is challenging the ban on homegrows in Manitoba or Quebec on behalf of himself and any others that may be penalized for growing cannabis at home.
CONFLICT OF INTEREST
Sanity group’s record funding round led by BAT could bring more big-tobacco capital to cannabis, but concerns remain over conflicts of interest
Last week Berlin-based cannabis operator Sanity Group closed Europe’s largest ever cannabis investment round worth €37.6m, bringing its total funding to date to over €100m, reports BusinessCann.
While the Series B round saw long term investors like Casa Verde Capital increase their holding, it was notably led by tobacco giant British American Tobacco (BAT), marking its second cannabis investment in less than a month.Â
While the tobacco industry may be able to provide a chunk of the institutional investment the industry has been crying out for, some investors are likely to remain cautious of conflicts of interest between big-tobacco and medical cannabis.
