Settling in to the New Normal

As the world begins to settle in to the new normal of social distancing and working from home, the Business of Cannabis team is building toward a week-long, virtual event: Cannabis + Technology | Retail Tech presented by LeafLink. Find out more information about the partners and program. Follow Business of Cannabis on Twitter and LinkedIn for all the details.

On Thursday, along with our partner Cannabis At Work, we launched the Cannabis Talent Help List – with an aim of connecting cannabis industry professionals with those in the sector looking to hire.

Also last week, there was news of a spike in cannabis sales, and this week, there is continued news that cannabis is being deemed an essential service, except if you are the Business Development Bank of Canada or Farm Credit Canada. And in the midst of this, one producers’ employees are in the midst of (potentially) unionizing.

So, as you settle in with your newly-hoarded cannabis purchases and binge-watch Tiger King, the industry moves along.

Read on…

Remember this fact: cannabis has been deemed an essential service in Ontario and most of the country at this point… and people throughout Canada and the US are taking advantage and buying in bulk.

Yet…

While government help is on the way for many hit by the new economic realities in Canada – the Canadian cannabis industry may not be included. Both the BDC and Farm Credit Canada have made it impossible (or nearly impossible) to gain access to relief funds. Follow Dan Sutton of Tantalus Labs for the latest.

On this note, we would encourage you to join the folks at Legal Tender and add your name to the growing list of folks pushing to right this wrong.

The workers at WeedMD are looking to join the United Food and Commercial Workers union. This will be a precedent-setting unionization effort for the sector.

And finally, it was another rough week in the cannabis digital media realm as Leafly laid off 91 people (50%) of their staff. Including much of/all (?) the Canadian operation.

Which brings us to some of our programming this week:
